Pyhätunturi is worn rock, part of a range ground down over a stretch of time nobody counts in human terms, and the forest on its slope is old growth rather than plantation. Neither was made for visitors. The winter accommodation goes up fresh each season; the fell stays.

The fell rises directly behind the site, and the national park boundary with its old spruce begins close by. Igloos and cabins stand on the lower slope, turned north for the sky. Trails from the door lead up into forest within a few minutes of walking.

Glass units are set out on open ground below the treeline and taken down or refitted between seasons. Service buildings sit near the road. Nothing was cleared far into the forest, so the tree edge marks where building stops and the slope begins.

Amethyst sits in a seam within the quartzite of Luosto, formed by processes in the rock itself over a span nobody measures in human terms. Mining came very late in that story. The mine and its visitor route are recent work; the crystal in the ground is not.

The seam lies up on the fell, inside the national park, a good way above the hotel and reached by a marked route rather than from the door. The hotel itself stands at the foot, among pines. Between the two lie open fell, forest and rising ground.

The hotel was built at the base of the slope, with rooms, a spa and the winter snow and glass accommodation grouped near the road. That winter part is rebuilt each season. Nothing was constructed on the seam, which stays where the fell keeps it.

Ice left the hilltop as rock and till, and the spruces on it have grown slowly in weather that keeps them short and heavy with snow for much of the year. Trees take a long time to reach that shape. Nobody planted them, and nobody arranged the view.

The hotel stands on the summit itself, so the old spruces begin at the doors and run down every side of the hill. Forest continues below toward the low ground. From the top it is the trees, rather than any building, that the eye follows outward.

Buildings were placed along the crown of the hill and kept low, with rooms, restaurant and winter cabins spread between standing trees. Clearing went no further than road and foundations required, so the summit woodland closes in again within a short distance.

Inari holds a great many islands, shaped by ice and long held as significant ground in Sámi tradition. Water and islands were here before any road reached this shore. The lake is not scenery arranged for guests; the accommodation was placed where the lake could be seen.

The site sits on the lake shore, with water immediately in front and islands visible offshore in clear weather. This is a separate location of the operator, away from the main village, so the shore is reached from the property rather than from a road.

Cabins and rooms face the water along the bank, and the winter accommodation is built again each season and removed when it goes. Service buildings sit behind, near the road. The shoreline itself was left alone, with everything stepped back from it.
